Obesity – Who Wants to Talk About It?

Are You Still Here?

I’m surprised you’re still with me. The moment the word obesity is mentioned, people tend to quickly switch to another subject. Overweight people don’t even want to think that they could be nearing obesity. They refuse to believe that they could be close to the line where being overweight crosses over to obesity.

Here’s a typical response from people 35 to 75 pounds over their ideal weight. “Who me? Yeah, I’m carrying a few extra pounds, but I’m just stocky (men) or full figured (women). I know I should lose some weight and I’m going to start my diet next week”.

If I had a nickle for every time I said or heard this one, I’d be very wealthy. Here’s my message for overweight people: The difference between being overweight and being obese is TIME. You’ll get there if you keep trying! I can help you,…but you’ve got to want to make that lifestyle change. My healthy living weight loss site, which you’ll see below, is a good resource for many different types of weight loss programs, one of which is probably just right for you, a friend or loved one.

Meanwhile, obese people are most often so very sensitive and can’t or won’t admit that their weight is a problem. Here’s a typical quote: ” I don’t care if I’m big. I love food. People can take me like I am.” I’m not sure whether most of them realize how dangerous obesity is. They are often very hard to persuade that they are going to permanently damage or kill themselves, if they keep on the same path.

Often, academics like to point out studies that are full of facts and statistics.Their role seems to be more on the documentation end of things. Statistics don’t seem to reach obese people. Meanwhile, weight loss counselors try and help to put overweight and obese people on the right path to recovery. There are hundreds of good diets for obesity, that combine weight loss and exercise. They work, too, for a while. So why does obesity keep growing in severity?

Statistics tell us the that, around the world, there are more than 1 billion overweight people, age 18+, and at least 300 million of these are obese. I believe that most overweight people want to change, but they either relapse or never get started. Maybe it’s going to take more than a little will power. Maybe it’s time for an intervention.

An intervention is a subject that’s also very hard to discuss. No one wants to be the ringleader of a group of people who face a friend or loved one with facts.Intervention is a process you need some professional help with. If you finally come up with the courage to organize an intervention, get some help with a plan before you get started. When you sign on for this, be prepared to stay in it for the long haul.

If you are fortunate enough to intervene before permanent damage or death occurs, you will ultimately feel like you helped give someone back their life.

Anorexia – How to Change Wrong Beliefs

Anorexia starts from special beliefs: beliefs about themselves, body image, control and perception of beauty. These beliefs are tightly connected to strong emotions – both negative and positive.

These “Beliefs+ Emotions+ action” form the long-term memory in the brain.

So, why do these memories get so ingrained in a person’s brain that nothing seems to change them?

This happens because these “Beliefs + Emotions+ action” actually change the structure of a person brain. Experiments have shown that for short-term memories to become long-term ones, a new protein has to be made in brain cell (neuron).

The experiments also show that short-term memory becomes a long-term one when a chemical in the neuron called protein kinase A, moves from the body of the neuron into its nucleus, where our genes are stored. The protein then turns on a gene to make another protein that alters the structure of the nerve endings, so that it grows new connections between the neurons (brain cells).

Why I am telling you this scientific stuff – is to show you that Beliefs are not just something intangible, Beliefs can actually change the structure of the brain (brain cells and connections between the brain cells).

It seems reasonable to me that the real cure for anorexia is to change the sufferers Beliefs about themselves, body image, control and perception of beauty. These new Beliefs should also be emotionalized: this is important. These new “beliefs + emotions+ action “will form new long-term memories and new chemicals will form in the brain cells changing the brain structure in a new positive way.

The same process occurs in learning. We learn something, we believe it is factual, we emotionalise it, and we use in over and over (action).

Why nothing seems to be of help for many anorexics?

This is because nothing so far has evoked strong emotions in them. Nothing has inspired them to change their mind or stop their anorexic ways. They can find nothing to believe in more than they can believe in the anorexia: it is all powerful.

Anorexia just can’t be taken away from them; anorexia can only be replaced with something they believe in more than their disorder. Changing the person’s beliefs is the real cure for anorexia.

Changing beliefs for the anorexic can only happen on the subconscious level: the level where our feelings and emotions live. This can only be done with beliefs+ emotions+ action the same way they got their anorexia in the first place.

The best people who can help a sufferer with this are people who are close, like a mother, father, spouse, sibling or a very close friend. People who are close to the sufferer can affect the subconscious mind of a person much deeper and easier than anyone else (including therapists, doctors and psychiatrists). Anorexics need family support much more than anyone else.

But they also need a process to affect the subconscious mind and without this it is doubtful they will recover. This process must contain Beliefs+ Emotions+ Actions the same as they used before only positive ones not the negative anorexic ones. Luckily there are such processes available to help today they are call neuroplasticity treatments

Get Healthy and Fit and So Will Your Children

We all lead by example. Therefore, the best thing you can do to ensure that your child leads a healthy lifestyle it to have one yourself.

If you are fat and out of shape and lead a sedentary lifestyle the chances are very good that your children will follow suit. Obesity is becoming a major problem in the US and in many parts of the world. This is a problem that trickles down from adults. Children see their parent’s bad habits all day long and they eventually adopt similarities.

My daughter, who is now in her twenties, reads labels. Anything with high fructose corn syrup or vegetable oils she will avoid. I never consciously taught her to do this but she saw me do it and now she does it. I also always exercised and took care of my body and guess what? So does she. I never enforced the idea on her in anyway. I just lead by example and it worked.

Educated parents, who are fit and healthy themselves, are always the best teachers. Remember children don’t always listen to what you say, but they follow what you do.

If you ever wondered why people eat so much fast food it’s not really a mystery. It is pretty much common knowledge that the food is not very good for you but people still go there in droves. Part of it is convenience and price but even more so is it becomes a habit. Your children will learn that habit from you just as you may have learned it from your parents.

The same thing applies to fitness. If you take care of your body and work out the chances are excellent that your children will develop the lifestyle of a fit person. That doesn’t mean you have to join a gym, although you can if that’s what helps you keep in shape. Body weight calisthenics are also an excellent source of exercise. Yoga exercises and Pilates can be good as well. Or maybe you’d like to just get out with your son or daughter and kick around a ball. Anything that gives your child an example of being fit is a good idea. Another benefit of leading by example is that it gets you to lead a healthier lifestyle as well.

You often hear parents complain about their children. But many times their children are a reflection of themselves. The next time you hear a parent complain about the behavior or actions of their children you might suggest they go look into the nearest mirror as the source of the problem. Admittedly, the child’s action don’t always reflect from the parents in the teen years but after they get through that time period it is almost amazing to see how many habits a young adult will have that are similar to their parents.

So if you as a parent want your child to be healthy, it all starts with you. Eat right and exercise and the generations that follow you will likely do the same. You and they will all benefit.

The Quite Incredible History of Honey

The history of honey is as long and as rich as the history of the honeybee. Honeybees are believed to have preceded humans on earth by more than 10 million years, perhaps longer.

As early as 7,000 B.C. prehistoric carvings indicate that man enjoyed honey from the honeycomb, with drawings even illustrating early man risking his life against angry honey bees intent on protecting their hive.

Mentioned in ancient texts, such as the Indian Vedas, the Jewish Torah, the Koran, the Chinese Shi Jing, and depicted in ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics, honey directly from the honeycomb appears to have been as much a delight then as it is now.

From these ancient recordings it is clear that civilizations across the globe have enjoyed the benefits of honey throughout history. In fact, though frequently mentioned throughout the Christian Bible it is worth mentioning that when the Christian Messiah, Jesus, arose from the grave, the gospel of Luke states that he was first fed broiled fish and a honeycomb.

Julius Caesar even reportedly accepted honey as a type of currency that was used to pay taxes in place of gold. And in the 11th century German citizens actually paid their property taxes with honey and beeswax.

Widely credited as being the father of modern medicine, the Greek physician Hippocrates of Cos (460 BC – ca. 370 BC) valued honey for its medicinal properties. He is noted as using it as an expectorant and claimed that it caused heat, which was useful for cleaning ulcers, wounds and running sores.

He also believed that honey was good for the skin’s complexion. Hippocrates is noted to have encouraged the planting of seeds that had been soaked in honey, which he believed made the fruit that grew from the seedlings taste even sweeter.

After his death, the history of honey and Hippocrates continues as legends tell of a swarm of honeybees that lived in his sepulcher, which is the tomb he was buried in and continued to produce their sweet substance, which was then used to cure sick children when nothing else would.

The first century Greek philosopher, pharmacist, botanist and physician, Dioscorides, who authored one of the oldest journals of medicine, even cited honey as one of the greatest remedies ever.

As a natural food with incredible nutritional and medicinal value, Homer, Aristotle and Pythagoras all are added to the list of those in the history of honey who believed it to be a key ingredient to good overall health.

The history of honey as a celebrated medicine extends all the way to the Second World War when honey was widely touted for its use as an effective wound treatment on injured soldiers. This treatment is widely used on our brave soldiers of today also.

Prior to the production of penicillin, the history of honey shows it to have been the leading antibiotic treatment used for open wounds and lesions.

The history of honey is as old as the written word. For the longest time, it was the only sweetener that was widely available to humans before the mass production of sugar grew to replace it after the 1800s. As a food and as a medicinal agent, the history of honey is actually older than the history of man and certainly older than the history of modern medicine.

From ancient carvings and manuscripts discovered all over the world, honey appears as a delicacy and a heavily lauded medicine, it definitely deserves the recognition.
