Diabetic Eye Complications Treatment

Diabetes is reaching epidemic proportions in the United States with more then 26 million Americans currently suffering with this serious disease. The most common of the eye complications are bleeding in the retina and macular swelling. Diabetic retinopathy is the leading cause of blindness in young Americans, and the swelling of the retina is due to chronic, long term retinal inflammation.

In an attempt to treat this very serious inflammatory condition, steroid injections have been given directly into the affected eye. It should be noted that this therapeutic modality in not FDA approved, but doctors have continued to employ it since it has been effective in reducing the swelling. The problem has long been that this treatment has substantially increased risk of ocular complications. In addition, frequent injections every few months are required in order for the therapy to be effective.

The steroid injections reduce retinal thickness thus improving vision. The steroids inhibit this inflammation by suppressing the endothelial growth factor. This in turn decreases the vascular damage. These beneficial results only last about 3 months, but the potential side effects include cataracts, increased pressure in the eye, endophthalmitis (severe inflammation) and uveitis.

The goal is to increase the effectiveness of the steroid without increasing the negative side effects. Intraocular implants have been employed near the front of the eye, behind the natural lens, for treating multiple retinal conditions. These include cytomegalovirus (CMV) and posterior retinitis. These implants require sutures and thus have an increased risk of infection when used.

Iluvien is an injectable steroid that is currently under FDA investigation for Diabetic Macular Edema and will last up to 3 years after injection. It is injected with a 25 gauge needle which seals itself; not requiring any sutures. It can also be placed more posterior in the eye for higher effectively and thus better results; this will also decrease the chances of bad side effects so common with the other steroid injections.

Carefully Manage Your Lemonade Cleanse

Balance the Risks and Rewards in Your Detox Diet

Restoration and rejuvenation may shock a tired, overweight, overworked, and neglected body; but they definitely are just what the doctor ordered. Even if you stay on a traditional lemonade cleanse or one of its more palatable alternatives for just a few days, you will feel the benefits all over your body. The active ingredients in your lemonade cleanser search out and carry away all the toxins, pathogens, carcinogens, and free radicals accumulated in your system. All your major organs and all your vital systems benefit from the cleansing.

Benefits for circulatory, renal, and digestive systems

The lemonade in your cleansing beverage introduces lots of antioxidants into your system without adding calories from natural sugars; lemons have by far the lowest glycemic index among all the citrus fruits, and their glycemic index ranks among the very lowest in the entire orchard. During the initial stages of cleansing, lemon's powerful antioxidants detach free radicals from your cells and they detach damaged cells from all your vital organs. Especially promoting circulation, lemonade helps reduce accumulated free radicals from your bloodstream. Meanwhile, the cayenne in your detox beverage increases your circulation without elevating your heart rate or blood pressure. Dilating your veins and arteries, cayenne should help you feel more energetic, because it reduces strain on your heart as it pumps your blood through your 60,000-mile circulatory network. Cayenne also improves your digestion, slightly changing the pH in your gastro-intestinal system and increasing the volume of your digestive juices, so that you efficiently, effectively break down and metabolize food. Green tea enhances the antioxidant effects and soothes your stomach as it grows slightly more acidic; and organic maple syrup supplies vital carbohydrates in complex form, so that they metabolize slowly, steadily supplying energy.

Beware the fundamental flaw in homeopathy

Homeopathy derives from two basic premises: First, homeopaths believe "like cures like." Second, they wholeheartedly believe that a remedy which would make a healthy person sick will make an unhealthy person well. Although the standard lemonade cleanse contains nothing dangerous, nothing even remotely toxic or even vaguely man-made, it nevertheless poses some health risks. If your immune system has suffered serious compromise, or of you suffer diabetes, the lemonade cleanse will make you even sicker. Even if your doctor and homeopath certify your fundamental good health, the strange mix of lemonade, cayenne, and maple syrup may cause diarrhea, cramping, vomiting, and other gastro-intestinal stress. Cayenne in the mix also can cause tachycardia, profuse perspiration, and serious indigestion or heartburn. To some extent, all of these symptoms naturally correspond with detoxification, because the lemonade cleanse taxes all your body's natural waste-removal systems. If, however, the symptoms increase or persist for more than twenty-four hours, suspend your detoxification and consult either your homeopath or your primary care physician. Do not take over-the-counter stomach medicines or pain-relievers, because they will aggravate your symptoms.

Beware the dangers of excess

Do not extend your lemonade cleanse beyond forty days, because you risk anemia, incipient anorexia, and shock. In fact, mid-way through your lemonade cleanse, you may begin supplementing your liquid nourishment with fresh fruits and vegetables, gradually rebuilding your system's tolerance for solid foods while sustaining all the benefits of detoxification. Meanwhile, you very probably will experience powerful cravings, because you have habituated your body to a variety of sugars, food additives, and flavor enhancers. Whereas most doctors advise reading a craving as your body's demand for particular nutrients, during your lemonade cleanse you cannot cave-in to your cravings-not even a little, and nothing even close to a full-on binge. Most of all, make certain you stay well hydrated. The green tea in your lemonade mix acts as a powerful diuretic, and the cayenne probably will make you sweat considerably more than you regularly do. If you experience diarrhea, it also will dehydrate you. Promote your cleansing and circulation, maintain your natural equilibrium, and protect your vital organs by drinking plenty of water.

Healthier skin tips

If you want healthier skin, there are several things that you can do, and most of them don't really require that much effort on your part. They are simple things that people can incorporate into their diet quite easily and by doing so they will be able to see better looking, more trouble free skin than they had in the past. Some people are just blessed with good skin, and they have to do very little to make it look great. Others were not so lucky. They may have acne, they may get wrinkles earlier and more easily than some people, or their skin might be very oily, dry and flaky, blotchy, or sallow and dull.

No matter what kind of skin you have, though, you can make it look better with just a little bit of effort. First, you have to keep it very clean. Washing all that makeup off before you go to bed might seem like a big pain, but it's very important. One of the worst things that women can ever do for their skin is to sleep with makeup on. You should also be eating well and drinking a lot of water, because being well hydrated is essential to ensuring that your skin looks good.

Whatever specific problem your skin has, it's important that you pay attention to that and that you find the cleansers and toners and other products that work for you. People with oily skin probably don't want to use the same kinds of cleansers as do people with dry skin. They just won't work that well for both skin types. There are some cleansers and other products that claim to be for all skin types, and they are, but in a very general way. You should learn about the type of skin you have and what's best for it, and then stick with products - cleansers, makeup, moisturizers, etc - that are designed for your skin type.

It will help your skin stay healthier and better looking no matter what your age. You also want to take a good multivitamin and stay out of the sun as much as possible, because the sun ages your skin very quickly. If you can't avoid the sun, using good sunscreen and wearing long sleeves and a large-brimmed hat will help you to protect your skin from damage. Following these tips can give you younger looking skin with a minimum of effort.

Stop Smoking - How to Stop Smokin

Smoking! The worst thing I ever did was start smoking and the hardest thing I've ever did was stop. Nicotine is probably one of the most addictive drugs on the planet. I've spoken to former heroin addicts who said giving up heroin was easier than stopping smoking. Smoking related diseases are the biggest killer in the UK, and costs the tax payer a fortune. So why doesn't why doesn't the government ban smoking? 9.3 billion pounds in tax revenue is the answer, its a lot of money.

So what are the options if you want to stop smoking? Will power..will power alone is the hardest way to pack in smoking, any one who smokes will know what I am on about. Then theirs the gum and lozenge's they do work but the down side that I found was that I became addicted to them, and had a battle giving them up, after all they are nicotine. Every one is different and different products suit different people and I can only speak from my own personal experience.

I stopped smoking using another method, basically a course of tablets that lasted about 12 weeks, they work by tricking the brain into thinking its had a dose of nicotine and the best part is they don't contain nicotine, there are a few side effects though, I had a banging head ache and a dry mouth from time to time, but they are not as bad as the side effects of smoking. I have stopped smoking now for 9 months and so far so good. I feel a 100% healthier now,it took a bit of will power but the end result was worth it. "Good luck on giving up".

Autism - Meaning, Causes and the Way Out

Autism (say: aw-tih-zum) causes kids to experience the world differently from the way most other kids do. It's hard for kids with autism to talk with other people and express themselves using words. Kids who have autism usually keep to themselves and many can't communicate without special help.

They also may react to what's going on around them in unusual ways. Normal sounds may really bother someone with autism - so much so that the person covers his or her ears. Being touched, even in a gentle way, may feel uncomfortable.

Kids with autism often can't make connections that other kids make easily. For example, when someone smiles, you know the smiling person is happy or being friendly. But a kid with autism may have trouble connecting that smile with the person's happy feelings.

A kid who has autism also has trouble linking words to their meanings. Imagine trying to understand what your mom is saying if you didn't know what her words really mean. It is doubly frustrating then if a kid can't come up with the right words to express his or her own thoughts.

Autism causes kids to act in unusual ways. They might flap their hands, say certain words over and over, have temper tantrums, or play only with one particular toy. Most kids with autism don't like changes in routines. They like to stay on a schedule that is always the same. They also may insist that their toys or other objects be arranged a certain way and get upset if these items are moved or disturbed.

If someone has autism, his or her brain has trouble with an important job: making sense of the world. Every day, your brain interprets the sights, sounds, smells, and other sensations that you experience. If your brain couldn't help you understand these things, you would have trouble functioning, talking, going to school, and doing other everyday stuff. Kids can be mildly affected by autism, so that they only have a little trouble in life, or they can be very affected, so that they need a lot of help.

What Do Doctors Do?

Figuring out if a kid has autism can be difficult. A parent is usually the first to suspect that something is wrong. Maybe the kid is old enough to speak but doesn't, doesn't seem interested in people, or behaves in other unusual ways. But autism isn't the only problem that can cause these kinds of symptoms. For example, kids who have hearing problems might have trouble speaking, too.

Usually, the results of lab tests and other medical tests are normal in kids with autism, but doctors may do them to make sure the kid doesn't have other problems. These medical tests can include blood and urine tests, a hearing exam, an EEG (a test to measure brain waves), and an MRI (a picture that shows the structure of the brain). Intelligence (IQ) tests also might be done.

Often, specialists work together as a team to figure out what is wrong. The team might include a pediatrician, a pediatric neurologist, a pediatric developmentalist, a child psychiatrist, a child psychologist, speech and language therapists, and others. The team members study how the child plays, learns, communicates, and behaves. The team listens carefully to what parents have noticed, too. Using the information they've gathered, doctors can decide whether a child has autism or another problem.

How Is Autism Treated?

There is no cure for autism, but doctors, therapists, and special teachers can help kids with autism overcome or adjust to many difficulties. The earlier a kid starts treatment for autism, the better.

Different kids need different kinds of help, but learning how to communicate is always an important first step. Spoken language can be hard for kids with autism to learn. Most understand words better by seeing them, so therapists teach them how to communicate by pointing or using pictures or sign language. That makes learning other things easier, and eventually, many kids with autism learn to talk.

Therapists also help kids learn social skills, such as how to greet people, wait for a turn, and follow directions. Some kids need special help with living skills (like brushing teeth or making a bed). Others have trouble sitting still or controlling their tempers and need therapy to help them control their behavior. Some kids take medications to help their moods and behavior, but there's no medicine that will make a kid's autism go away.

Students with mild autism sometimes can go to regular school. But most kids with autism need calmer, more orderly surroundings. They also need teachers trained to understand the problems they have with communicating and learning. They may learn at home or in special classes at public or private schools.

Living With Autism

Some kids with mild autism will grow up and be able to live on their own. Those with more serious problems will always need some kind of help. But all kids with autism have brighter futures when they have the support and understanding of doctors, teachers, caregivers, parents, brothers, sisters, and friends.

A Few Tips to Successfully Control High Blood Pressure

High blood pressure has nowadays become literally an epidemic, something that is a common condition amongst the people. About 1 out of every 3 people suffers from hypertension. Fortunately, it can be controlled very easily. In this article I will give you some tips to control your blood pressure (BP) successfully.

Proper Weight Maintenance. There are several guides online that will tell you, based on your height, what you should weight. Look these up and see if your current weight falls in the ranges provided. If it doesn't start an exercise program so you can lose the pounds/kilos necessary to be in your healthy range. By dropping down to your ideal range, your blood vessels will be able to expand fully and less pressure will be on them.

If you are taking hypertension medication, don't skip your doses. There are better alternatives to drugs to regulate your BP but if you are taking these medications, then it is very important to never miss a dose.

Exercise daily. This is not the same as losing weight as mentioned above. Try to exercise for at least half an hour a day. You don't have to exercises the 30 minutes at one time, you can split it into segments, like 3 segments of 10 minutes each. The exercise will promote better heart health.

Pick a good diet. A diet low in salt and high in potassium is good. Potassium helps lower your high blood pressure and the less amount of salt means the less amount of water retention you will have. There is a widely known HBP diet known as the DASH diet. Look into it as a possible choice.
Stop drinking alcohol and smoking. Both of these raise your BP. By avoiding these actions, you will not raise your BP levels.

Lastly, get enough sleep. It is recommended to sleep 8 hours a day. So make sure you sleep enough. Try using ear plugs if you are easily waken by noises in the night. Make sure the room you sleep in is dark to prevent distractions as well.

Hypertension is a very serious disease, it can cause death from a heart attack or stroke. It can also leave you paralyzed from a stroke. You should take every precaution to prevent and treat this disease. The fact is the HBP is a silent killer and presents little if any symptoms before you are actually diagnosed.

Healthy Meal For You

Are you one of those people who have repeatedly tried to live on a healthy diet, but consistently failed? If yes, well, you must know that eating healthy should not be so difficult. Besides, the food that will make you healthy are probably in your kitchen or cupboard already. Here's a rundown on some healthy meal options.

Whole Grains
Eating whole grains will provide you with fiber that will help you stabilize your blood sugar level. Thus, this may prevent you from acquiring type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. Barley, oats, corn, brown rice are just some examples of whole grain food that you can include in your daily menu.

Plan of action: Whole grain meals are easier to integrate in breakfast menus. Nevertheless, you can still incorporate other whole grain options, like corn, into your lunch or dinner as your side-dish.

Oils
There are many types of oil. Among the them, canola, soybean, and olive oil are the healthier choices. Canola oil is high in cholesterol-reducing polyunsaturated fats. In the same manner, soybean oil can also minimize cholesterol. Olive oil, on the other hand, reduces bad cholesterol. These oils provide heart protection, thus preventing chronic heart problems.

Plan of action: Limit the use of butter. Use oils as substitutes instead. Olive oil, in particular, come in wide variety of interesting flavors that can add more interest and taste to your meals.

Fish
Like the oils mentioned earlier, fishes are also good for the heart. Fish contains omega-3 fatty acids which fights of heart disease.

Plan of action: Remember to always include fish in your weekly menu. Also, always have them in your grocery list. When pan-frying, avoid overcooking. What you want is to just lose the glassy look.

Nuts and Legumes
A lot of people don't know that nuts and legumes can actually regulate body weight. These two can suppress appetite and increase fiber intake. They can also counteract high cholesterol preventing type 2 diabetes.

Plan of action: Trade off your meat with legumes, at least once a week. Or you can try integrating nuts and legumes over appetizers or salads.

Don't Forget:
Fruits and the green leafy vegetables are staples in a healthy lifestyle. But also remember that healthy eating still comes down to a balanced diet. Make sure that your weekly menu have variations to address the different needs of your body system.

Stages of Sleep - Simple Human Behavior

Stages of sleep might be something that would appear to be of such simple and basic nature to the human understanding. We know we all need rest and we are also aware of the consequences of not getting enough of it!

We often take sleep for granted, especially teens and young adults, and only when the body is feeling discomfort does sleep seem to matter to many individuals. That is when you begin to search for insomnia remedies to help you get back on track.

However, the truth of the matter is that we seem to know very little about sleep. For instance, while we know what results when we don't get enough of it, experts are unable to explain why the body needs sleep.

It was only in 1953 when some of the more significant knowledge about stages of sleep were discovered and studied. Only then were machines that could monitor brain activity during rest actually developed. Prior to this period, it was a commonly held belief that brain activity stopped when we were sleeping.

Stages of sleep in human adults fall into two broad classifications. These types or classifications possess unique sets of associated neurological, psychological as well as physiological features. The two types of sleep are the REM (Rapid Eye Movement) and the NREM or the Non REM (Non Rapid Eye Movement).

The REM sleep is said to compose between 20 to 25 percent of the total adult sleep duration and this is the stage in which the most memorable dreaming takes place. The NREM stage, on the other hand, is a period that could be described as having relatively small or no dreaming at all.

The American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) has further broken down NREM stage into three sub-stages being N1, N2 and N3. N1 is described as a stage where one is drowsy and may drift in and out of sleep. N2 is when eye movement stops and there is a slowdown in brain activity. N3 is the stage wherein short brain waves referred to as delta waves appear in conjunction with faster but smaller brain waves. The REM is the period of deepest sleep and as we all know, it is quite difficult to wake somebody up once he has reached this stage.

The stages of sleep is a piece of knowledge that we hope to be able to learn more about as science advances and more research is made upon it. Here's to your successful sleep adventures!

Do you know the secret to perfecting the stages of sleep? Do you know how to keep insomnia at bay and manage the many nighttime maladies, such as sleep apnea, restless legs or even narcolepsy? Fast Relief For Anal Fissures

For those who have experienced the agonizing pain of anal fissures, you know that you need the fastest relief possible from this tearing, burning sensation. These tiny tears can cause a big problem, and you need a treatment that begins to work immediately.

What are anal fissures? Fissures are small tears in the wall of the anal canal. They are extremely common - they happen to nearly everyone at some point - and they can affect individuals of all ages. Even infants frequently suffer from an anal fissure.

These small tears can be caused by the strain of an over sized bowel movement, by frequent diarrhea, or by constipation. Women are especially prone to anal fissures during childbirth. The problem is often compounded by the fact that they cause so much pain upon defecation; those who have fissures are often reluctant to have a bowel movement, and constipation can be a result.

How do I know if I have an anal fissure? When you have an anal fissure, you will most likely experience a sharp, burning pain during bowel movements. Urination can also be painful, and you may experience itching as well. Small droplets of blood in the toilet or on toilet paper are also an indication of anal fissures; in some cases, a small amount of yellowish pus may also be present.

Your doctor can easily diagnose this condition by a description of the symptoms or a visual exam.

How can I prevent anal fissures? Eating a diet rich in fiber and making sure to have daily bowel movements can help you to avoid this painful and inconvenient problem. Drink plenty of water and get adequate rest and exercise to keep yourself regular, and you will notice the difference in your bowel habits.

What is the best treatment for an anal fissure? Some people find a sitz bath (soaking in shallow water) several times a day to be helpful. Topical ointments are also used in treating the tears, and in extreme cases, surgery may be required. With any of these treatment methods, it can take several weeks for the fissure to heal completely.
